Trauma-Informed Practice

Trauma-Informed Practice training helps participants understand how past or current experiences of trauma may influence a person’s communication, behaviour, engagement and sense of safety.

The purpose is not to identify or diagnose trauma. Instead, participants learn how everyday interactions, workplace systems and service responses can promote safety, trust, choice and respectful engagement while reducing the risk of causing further distress.

What participants will learn

Training can help participants:

  • Develop a practical understanding of trauma and its possible effects

  • Recognise that behaviour may communicate an unmet need or perceived threat

  • Apply principles of safety, trust, choice, collaboration and empowerment

  • Communicate clearly and respectfully during challenging interactions

  • Avoid unnecessarily confronting, coercive or judgemental responses

  • Support predictability and informed choice where possible

  • Balance trauma-informed engagement with workplace expectations

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries

  • Recognise when referral or additional support may be needed

  • Consider the effects of emotionally demanding work on employees

The training does not qualify participants to diagnose trauma or provide therapeutic treatment.

Who this training suits

Trauma-Informed Practice can be adapted for:

  • Community and human-service organisations

  • Education and youth services

  • Health and aged-care workplaces

  • Managers and supervisors

  • Customer-facing and frontline teams

  • Employees supporting people who may have experienced adversity or distress

Delivery and customisation

This is non-accredited, customisable training. Content can be tailored to the organisation’s work, workforce, clients, communication challenges and existing practice frameworks.

Delivery is available face-to-face in Dubbo and across regional NSW, with online delivery available nationally.

Organisational benefits

A trauma-informed approach can support safer interactions, clearer boundaries and more consistent service delivery. It can also help employees respond to challenging behaviour with greater understanding while continuing to meet organisational and professional responsibilities.
